Karnataka night curfew hits Yakshagana performance

Mangaluru: The 10-day night curfew imposed in Karnataka has forced the Yakshagana troops to change their performance timing.

Yakshagana is a traditional performing art mostly popular in Uttar Kannada, Udupi and Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka. There are many troops performing Yakshagana in the region. Usually, Yakshagana shows are held overnight and continue till morning.

But the night curfew imposed in the state has forced the troops to change the timing. As per the government order, the night curfew will be in force from 10 pm to 5 am.

The Kateel Mela has announced rescheduling its shows from Tuesday.

“The night curfew is in enforcement in the state from December 28 to January 7. Due to this, we have decided to change the Yakshagana timings of all six teams. It will now be from 3.30 pm to 9 pm,” Kateel temple hereditary archak Sriharinarayanadasa Asranna told Deccan Chronicle.

Mandarthi Mela in Udupi too has taken a similar step.

“We have asked the managers of all our five teams to change the timings. The shows will now be held from 5 pm to 9.30 pm,” Mandarthi temple management committee president Dhananjay Shetty said.

Other Melas too have rescheduled the timing of the performance.
